List of festival cancellations due to swine flu.

Here is a list of festival cancellations in Korea this summer and fall due to swine flu. Most of them have already passed, but since this weekend is a big one for festivals, the post is sort of timely. This information comes mostly from Naver, and when you search for festivals there and go to the last pages for each month you'll find those that have been cancelled (취소). Articles say that as of a few days ago 226 events have been cancelled because of the flu, though only a fraction of those are festivals listed below. I've done the best I could with names and translations, though some festivals don't have any English-language pages, and some have hardly any information about them at all. When available I've tried to add links to cancellation notices or copies of the pop-up notices. Many of the cancellations happened in early September, when the government recommended that any gathering with more than 1,000 people over more than two days should be cancelled. There's also a strong possibility that organizers are using swine flu as an excuse to cancel festivals that were not expected to be profitable, whether because they've struggled in the past, or because all the other cancellations would scare potential visitors away.

I'll update as we go, so feel free to add others or add corrections as a comment.

Is there any other way to interpret this stampede of cancellations other than mindless panic?

Julien, it would take a very long time to make a list of all the festivals through the rest of the year. I keep track of all the big Jeollanam-do ones, so if you check back on this site you'll be able to see them (also, check the "upcoming events" box on the top right-hand side). There are still a couple big ones in Jeollanam-do that I'll be writing about next week.

Can you read Korean? If so, click the Naver search link I put in the post. You can see festivals organized by month, and also by a number of other categories (food, flowers, music, etc.) That will tell you what's happening when. Of course, sometimes the dates aren't exact, because festivals don't decide until late when the festival will happen. So often you'll see a site saying the festival will be held in November, or mid-October, or something. Likewise, many sites haven't updated in years, so you'll only get information from 2006.

The Chungjangno Festival was originally cancelled, but it was then un-cancelled. It will take place this year from October 13th through the 18th.

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunatlly, i barely read korean, but i'll try to watch over it... The Chungjangno Festival interested me cause it says it's about 70-80's and i like korean music from that period, but i don't know if they includes it in the program... Do you know?

"Iksan: Amazing"
I've been to Iksan. As a matter of fact, I was there before they changed the name from 이리 (Iri). Something about the Japanese had renamed the city so the Koreans had to set the world straight and rename it. There is nothing amazing about Iksan. If I am wrong, please tell me. They should have a slogan for their province: Chollabuk-do: Nobody wanna marry our people outside here and Kyoungsan people hate us...but we have a the spicy food!

I forgot to say... If i go to that Chungjangno Festival, i can't before 16th and it will be more sure on 18th so the last day... Will there be some musical event on the last days? Also; is that place this >> http://wiki.galbijim.com/Chungjangno ? Thanks ^^

Great work Brian - though I have to say I'm glad most of the ones around Seoul / Gyeonggi-do are still on for the masses. Ironic that the bigger ones are on while the smaller ones close down...

Yes, Julien, that's the same Chungjangno. Actually, I was the one who wrote that article (I'm "Smee" on a lot of the Korea forums). It, like most of that wiki unfortunately, hasn't been updated in years, and there are a ton more coffee shops and restaurants down there.

Even if you barely read Korean, you can still probably get the gist of a lot of the upcoming festivals by reading the name. If something is taking place nearby, then it might be worth seeing. If you're in Gwangju/Jeollanam-do, there are only a few left this season (starting later in the month), and I'll be posting about them later.

I've been to the Chungjangno festival, and I'm sorry to say that it's really not a festival. They set up some tents, and there's a stage with some singing and some breakdancing, but I wouldn't exactly call it anything to get excited about. However, that area is kind of a neat part of Gwangju, so it will be a pleasant way to spend a day. I enjoyed looking at the old pictures they had on display, and there was a "walk down memory lane" display set up in an old building downtown---recreating homes and shops from the 50s-70s, quite interesting---though that building was bought by a church earlier in the year.

Anyway, you can find a program on the official website.

http://www.cjr7080.com/

Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to link to the individual pages there. THere will be stages set up both in front of the old provincial office (the big white building, can't miss it), and the post office, in the center of the pedestrian area. Through out the day and night they'll have singing and dancing, and I hope some of it whets your appetite for trot and 7080 stuff.

Checking page shows me the "walk down memory lane" (as I called "시간여행") will take place at the site of the old Joongang Church.

Thanks. Breakdancing.. ahah.. Did they breakdance in 70-80's? Seriously... 70-80's festival should not have MODERN music -__-;; The "commercial" video doesn't look exciting (to be honnest it quite sucks) and apparently there won't be any sound i like. However it could still be interesting to see some of the things as you said if i'm around.
