Gwangju Gawk At Foreigners And Take Their Pictures Festival: October 23rd - November 1st.

The Gwangju Gawk At Foreigners And Take Their Pictures Festival (광주김치문화축제) will be held from October 23rd through November 1st. This year, unlike years past, it take place at the Gwangju World Cup Stadium---accessible by a few city buses---which means you won't be able to see the three-dollar bill at the Gwangju Folk Museum, where the festival used to be held.

I went to the Gwangju Kimchi Culture Festival last year, it was all right, and I suspect I'll make an appearance again this weekend. My fiance made and took home a jar of kimchi last fall, and had a good time. And, whether intentional or not, they came up with a good English tagline this year: "Say Kimchi~"

But as the title of this post says, you may have to keep your eyes open for photographers who will stick your face on their blog, in their newspaper, or on their promotional material, just in case that's not your thing. There is, as everyone knows, nothing more unusual, and nothing more tantalizing to photographers, than foreigners elbow-deep in kimchi, as a news search attests:

It's pretty much the same as seeing this:

And a photograph of these two women won a prize in a local contest. I wonder if they knew about it.

The second most tantalizing thing for Korean photographers is, of course, foreign women in bikinis.

That makes me wonder why organizers haven't yet hit on what would surely be the greatest local festival in history:

and probably a lot of

Moving along, when the advertisements on this page take a break from talking about Scientology, or Muslim brides, or this woman

they sometimes provide useful information. Such as news of the Kimchi Love Festival (김치사랑축제). What is the Kimchi Love Festival? I'm glad you asked. This year's theme is "Design With Luxury Kimchi":
"KIMCHI LOVE FESTIVAL 2009" WHICH WILL BE HELD IN THE PALACE WHERE FORMS THE ESSENCE OF OUR CULTURE IS TO PROMOTE GLOBALIZATION THROUGH KIMCHI DISHES NOT AS A SIDE DISH WHICH IS A PART OF OUR FOOD BY KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING THE TRUE TASTE AND STYLE OF KIMCHI.

Why do they even bother with English sometimes? It will be held at Gyeonghuigung Palace in Seoul, which ROK Drop recently wrote up, and so far as I can tell it hasn't been cancelled yet.

There are times when I can't tell which Korea wrote the propoganda.

Hmm, go to gawk at Koreans or stay around Seoul and do the same thing... Tough call. Are you planning to attend? It'd be fun to meet up in meatspace - er, real life.

What I really like about the pic of the chic bent over, besides the obvious (which is the soccer ball, i love spheres), is that the photog decided to be creative and shoot that one from the side. I wonder if he was immediately fired for showing some semblance of non-gawkery.

Chris, I don't know. I might have other plans on Saturday, and may just make time during the week to go. I'll let you know. If you were planning to come down I'd show you around.

We went yesterday and it was fun. we walked around with our little tubs of homemade kimchi and all the old people kept pointing and saying...ahh kimchi good good....made us feel once again like rock stars in korea.

I was going to go this weekend, but I learned that I'm required to attend with my school on Wednesday, so I didn't. Because my fiance went but didn't have time to make a jar of kimchi, I HAVE to bring home the cabbage. Well, I guess it'll be all right; I didn't get a chance to do it last year.
