Five-day markets in Jeollanam-do.

Brian in Gangwon-do beat me to this, but there was an article in the Joongang Ilbo last week about the big five-day markets in Korea. Here are the four they listed for the Jeolla provinces, with the numbers refering to the dates on which the markets are held (3.8 jang means it's held on the 3rd, 8th, 13th, 18th, 23rd, and 28th, for example):
10. Gwangju Songjeongjang (3.8 jang) - This is the largest market in the Jeolla area.

11. Guryejang (3.8 jang) - This is the largest market in the Mount Jiri area. People come to buy and sell goods from as far as Hadong, South Gyeongsang.

12. Jangheung Saturday Market (open Saturdays) - This is a traditional market specializing in hanwoo, Korean beef.

13. Beolgyojang (4.9 jang) - This market sells fish from the sea near South Jeolla.

The article also directs readers to Hana Tour, which offers tours to each of the twenty markets they mentioned.

Five-day markets aren't that unique. According to the Market Management Support Center, also linked in the Joongang Ilbo article, there are 113 five-day markets in Jeollanam-do and Gwangju. You can find more information about 92 of the ones in Jeollanam-do on this NamdoKorea page. That's not including markets, like Gwangju's large Yangdong Market (양동시장), that are open every day.

The big one I know about in Seoul is the Moran Market (3.8 jang) - right across the street from teh Moran Meat Market. Don't go if you're sensitive to the treatment of animals :)

I used to live in Bundang, and so I've been to nearby Moran, but never to the market. Actually, the next subway station south, Taepyeong, is really neat. A great way to freshen up the staleness of Bundang. I'd like to make it back there before too long.

I've been to the ones in Gurye and Jangheung. Both are all right, and every town in Jeollanam-do actually has a pretty sizeable one. I'm more of a fan of the night markets you find in Hong Kong and Taiwan, though: markets that sell everything. I'm not as impressed with rows of fish and vegetables on the sidewalk.
