Starting Friday, October 16th, Suncheon will have 100 public bicycles available for rent. They are distributed among five stations located near Dongcheon, the river that runs through town. The stations are listed on the website, and include Pungdeokgyo---the bridge nearest the bus terminal---and at Suncheon Bay. By clicking on the stations here you can see how many bicycles are currently available at each one.
Use of the bicycles will be free through October 31st, after which they're available for 1,000 won for three hours. You can sign up to use one on the homepage, or you can visit an automated kiosk set up at the five stations.
Suncheon promotes itself as the Ecological Capital of Korea (대한민국 생태수도), and this effort is representative not only of that, and the desire to promote Suncheon Bay as an eco-tourism destination, but of a trend in Korea to promote cycling in general.

I think this is a great idea and would like to see Mokpo develop more bike friendly areas. I wonder how many of these bikes will get stolen though.
I dunno, it seems like that'd be way more common back home. I'm impressed that you find exercise equipment in parks and on mountains. In the US those things would either be stolen or destroyed in about six seconds . . . then again, people are too insecure to be seen exercising in public.
I think I read that other areas of Jeollanam-do will be making these kinds of bikes available, but I don't recall the source. I'll have to look around some more.
