A trip to the Moran meat market.

Chris in South Korea took a trip to the meat market in Moran, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, most notorious among foreigners for being your one-stop shop for fresh dog meat.

There is a small market in Shindang(next to Dogdaemoon) that I went to years ago. I am still haunted by what I saw there. I wondered into a side alley, and there were dogs in cages. One large white dog had a tennis ball shoved in its mouth. Through the tennis ball was a thick wire that may have been a clothes hanger. It was tied so tight that it was cutting into the sides of the dog's mouth. It was raining and water and blood was dripped off the dog. Another dog in the cage was licking the blood off the dog's face. I became frightened and quickly left. Koreans believe that the dogs must be tourched before death. It supposedly makes the meat sweeter. Clearly, that dog was being tourtured. I also heard right before they kill the dogs, they burn the fur off and scourch the skin so that the pain will make the meat sweeter. Nice people.
