Foreigners eligible for tax break.
From East Windup Chronicle comes news that foreigners are eligible for a tax refund authorized by President Lee Myung-bak. It is to offset the rising costs associated with the price of oil, and the 240,000 won refund is available for taxpayers who earn between 24 and 36 million won per year, with more or less available for those outside that range. The form is available in Korean, and has most likely be distributed only to the Koreans at your school so ask about it. It's called the 유가환급금 신청 의뢰서 and the deadline for the school or company to submit it is this coming Monday, October 20th. Some qualifications may apply, and some teachers may not even be paying taxes yet, but at least look into this today or tomorrow. You can also take a look at the form and instructions, in Korean, through a Naver search.

My coworker told me about this so I'm all signed up. She then proceeded to ask me for half of my money because I don't drive a car. Thanks 2MB!
Last Friday, my co-teacher said,"Jamie, you are eligible for this money."
I said, with melodramatic effect, "Oh, no... This money is for Korean citizens and it is not my place to take money from Korea."
He said, "Oh, you are very honorable."
Ten minutes later, he said, "I asked the vice-president(lol) and he said that you should take Thursday and Friday off. Also, the school will now cover the cost of your lunch."

When does this thing consider your taxes from? our boss said that because we didn't pay taxes LAST year, my fiancee can't do it. We have been here since Jan2, 2008. It just doesn't sound right to me.
My school is looking into it for me. Apparently, you had to be here for a year as of last December (so people who arrived during 2007 don't qualify).
I arrived in April 2006, but there is evidently some sort of loophole which will certainly prevent me from getting it.
I've been paying taxes here for 2.5 years. I don't file for a tax return in Canada.
Be careful if your school tells you that you aren't paying taxes. My friend recently left Korea and had to cough up over 2 years in back taxes before she left because her school had forgotten to deduct them.
I'd like to see what comes of this. I've been paying taxes for at least a year, and would like to see a little kick-back.
Virginia, you've been paying taxes for 2.5 years? Maybe it's just a US thing, but we're exempt for the first two years. I paid taxes for the first year, but got a big refund, and in the second year I didn't. Hope that's long enough.
My school tells me I have to have lived here for two years to get the refund.
Then, the admin ofice said tehy needed my income tax form form last year before they would even hlep me.
My co-wrokere helped me log-on to the internet website where i entered my ARC number. It popped up as an error message of some sort and i wasn't allowed to copmlete the forms online.
I have my 2007 income tax refund from the different employer, of last yea. The current school admin read it, and told me I was considered a PT employee in 2007.
I think this i simply avoiding the situation.
They also stated my foreign co-worker "Made too much money last year to receive the refund."
Help ASAP, as I have a few more days to go online and bring this money home!
