This weekend: Gwangju pop concert, Naju festival, Boseong pansori festival.

A couple of events going on this weekend. There's a big concert going on in Gwangju, the Gwangju Pop Music Festival, featuring the hip-hop group Dynamic Duo and people I've never heard of like Super Kid and Pia. It will start at 3 pm on Saturday in front of the bus terminal. The Gwangju Biennale is still on for those looking for something else to do.

Also a festival in Naju, the Yeongsan River Festival. A while ago I found a blog entry about this written by some missionaries in the area, but I can't find it now. The festival looks all right, and to have some pretty typical fare, but if you've never been to Naju it might be as good a time as any to make the trip.

Finally, in Boseong on Saturday and Sunday is the Seopyeonje Pansori Festival (서편제보성소리축제), devoted to the region's ties to the pansori style of traditional music. It's going to be held at the indoor gym, on the one side of town.

Pia is great!! I don't know a lot of Korean bands but they are one I've heard of. ^^

I'll vouch for the Dynamic Duo too. You can find clips of theirs on YouTube, and I saw them a couple of years ago in Daegu. I was actually there to see the other act of the night, which was No Brain, but Dynamic Duo impressed me even more... perhaps as I wasn't expecting it and I'm not typically into hip hop or rap style sounds. But they were good fun and great vibes. Recommended.

Thanks for the tip on this free gig in Gwangju. I was just feeling a bit down for not getting up to Seoul for some live music up that way this weekend... Good timing, BiJ!

It looks as if the Rocktigers will be playing, as well! They're AMAZING: great stage presence, a slick '50s-style wardrobe, and immensely fun rockabilly songs. HIGHLY recommended! (Super Kid and Pia are great, as well.)

Thanks for the heads-up!

Neat, I'm wondering if I should go, then. I had planned to just stay in Suncheon. I like Dynamic Duo but don't follow Korean music well enough to know the others. Thanks for the tips.
