Here are some ig'nant-ass English teachers in Busan.

Some EPIK teachers in Busan have decided to hold a public petition-signing this Sunday because the unfavorable exchange rate means they're now earning less than they had originally believed they would. The organizer has only been in the country since September, so I'm not sure the indignation is really justified. As she writes on another group:
Are you interested in joining my petition to increase EPIK pay due to the dramatically HORRIBLE won? Contact me if so.

Um, what? No word on the person to whom they'll refund their extra money when the won drops back to 1,000 on the dollar.

Some people REALLY want to make it more difficult for the rest of us here. Here's hoping the sensationalistic Korean media doesn't get ahold of this one.

Why is this Korea's responsibility in the first place? I'm not sending money home, and even though I plan on taking my savings back to the US at some point, I wouldn't dare ask such a question. They signed the contract in won. That's it. What a douche.

People like this will certainly hurt ATEK's effort as well.

I've already pointed out to her, that she has already had 2 international vacations since she has been here, once to Japan and then on a trip around Thailand and Cambodia and she has joined the face book group

"F*ck the credit crunch and lets spend our last pennies on booze and drugs, "

Now she is having a protest about wanting a payrise!!!?

suffice to say I got an EM from her and the site has been deleted. I really detest these idiots.

Stupid.

Nothing against Starbucks, of course.

Well, as long as it's not full of these people when I'm sipping on my latte^^.

I TOLD HER!

Jennifer Jeannette Izquierdo: furthermore, you know nothing about me, but my stupid fb page..grow up.

Stuart:the facts speak for themselves, really you are in no position to tell anybody to grow up.

The bottom line is that you took 2 international vacations in the last 6 months and you join immature facebook pages which seam to contradict what you are complaining about and also endorse alcohol abuse and drug taking.

Really if you know anything at all about the way foreign English teachers are perceived in this country you would have the sense to make your site private or better yet, not put them on your site in the first place for your students and public to see.

I pointed out these points on your ill founded protest page and thankfully it was taken down.

I have no further purpose to waste my time with idiots like yourself.

have a good few final months and bon voyage!, try not to cause any more embarrassment till then.

Thank you.

I blocked her contact after sending that to there will unfortunately be no more drama.

I have way too much time on my hands:(, maybe I should find a new hobby.

Quit it with the frowny face. That's the kind of hard-hitting facebook justice we like to see around here.

I noted this morning on Facebook the event has been canceled. It probably would have cut into someone's party time.

It would make sense for foreign teachers at EPIK, as a group, to request a temporary pay increase or bonus to offset the poor exchange rate. From what I've seen advertised, EPIK pay rates are on the low end of the industry, and the program is likely to have a big problem with recruitment and retention unless they do something. A memo to the EPIK head office signed by a number of teachers probably would be a good idea.

I think the dramatically horrible won is racist. Surely it's a plot to stick it to the English teachers. ;)

(I'm crying on the inside because my funds from Korea are supposed to pay for my dorm fees here in the States.)

Hmm, well I don't agree with asking for a pay raise because of the poor exchange rate. I think what EPIKers /should/ be petitioning for, if they're petitioning for anything, is an increase in the overall pay scale, which has remained unchanged since I was back home looking at schools. Keep the low end at 1.8 if they have to, but put it up to, say, 2.5 for an advanced degree, with an extra hundred per year of experience in Korea. But I think going the route the did, blaming the exchange rate, was just a poorly thought-out move.

GEPIK, in Gyeonggi province, surrounding Seoul, actually has upped the general pay scale already. The new contract for 2009--which can be read at http://ow.ly/FDF --gives Category 1+ as 2.5mil.

Still, I heard rumours from ignorant folks who said we'd be getting the mythical in-service pay-raise to offset the collapsing won. It's not going to happen, and it'd be a shame if it did. When you go to work overseas, you take the risk that the international economy might go to hell. Especially if you go overseas during a financial crisis like some of us did. Getting paid 2.1 or less is still better than sitting at home and being unable to find a job.

Sorry. I'll make that last link actually clickable.

Gyeonggi Province EPIK Contract 2009

Stuart said...

I now work for GEPIK, the salaries as far as I know without spending the time to check the current information on the EPIK page, run parallel.

level 3 2008=1.7 million
level 3 2009=2 million
level 2 2008=1.9 million
level 2 2009= 2.1 million
level 1 2008= 2.3 million
level 1 2009=2.3 million
level 1+2008=2.5 million
level 1+2009=2.5 million

The person in question is most likely a level 3 which means they have no teaching experience or qualifications and yet with this salary she has managed to take two international vacations in the last 6 months.

As for me I would be level 1+ now but I can not get it due to the fact that level 1+ was not in my 2008 contract. I have to wait till I sign the new contract in September, this makes logical sense.

To people that think they should get a pay rise because of this I will give this message.

The global financial problems are effecting everybody, suck it up and take it with some dignity.

Three words for them.

DEAL WITH IT.

The economic issues are affecting everyone around the world.

While trying to cite this event for this little post, I noticed this message:

Event Canceled
This Event is no longer available because it has been canceled.

That's right: We have chided them into submission!

Seriously, I wonder if they just got enough bad reviews of their idea or just a lack of interest, or their privates for that day called up and said they weren't canceling after all.
