North Korea threatens war if "satellite" is shot down.

If you're like me you sometimes forget you live next to North Korea. But this is currently the top story on CNN.com and likely on other news sites as well, and thus bears repeating here.

North Korea says it will retaliate if its "satellite" launch from its northeastern coast is intercepted, with the communist nation saying interference would "mean a war." The statement came as the North cut off communications with neighboring South Korea.

"Shooting our satellite for peaceful purposes will precisely mean a war," a spokesman for the North Korean army said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

U.S. and South Korean officials have said that North Korea appears to be preparing to test-fire its long-range missile, the Taepodong-2, under the guise of launching a satellite into space. The missile is thought to have an intended range of about 4,200 miles (6,700 kilometers), which -- if true -- could give it the capability of striking Alaska or Hawaii.

I think something will happen as the North Koreans have spent the last six months continually upping the ante that if that don't anything now, the whole world will know that they are paper tigers just bellyaching with more aid.

It seems certain that they will launch the Taepodong some time soon. The interesting part will be if it actually proves to be successful and the US decides to shoot it down. On CNN half an hour ago, they reported that North Koreans troops seem to moving towards the border in significant numbers. I predict that will launch the Taepodong within the next 48 hours and if it is shot down they will spark some kind of action to save face.

Yesterday was election day in North Korea and I predict Kim Jong-il will launch the Taepodong as his victory gesture. Apparently, South Korea and the US are about to embark on military exercises which is annoying the North, possibly they will do something then.

It's impossible to know exactly what will happen but I predict that the North have gone beyond words and will have to do something now to save face. The implications of their actions could be very, very significant.

I think this whole thing needs to be put in a large historical perspective . . .

In 2006, when NK did a nuke test, everybody went bananas . . .

In 2009, it seems to be happening all over again . . .

I'm sure if someone did a survey of news stories for the last 25 years it'd be the same "North Korea" bla bla bla . . .

If anything actually does happen we'll all be either evacuated and safe back home . . . or worse case scenario running for our freaking lives towards Jeju island to wait for the American navy to come save our butts . . .

I seriously find the whole thing pretty much a yawn--NK will never go 'all in' in a game of 'war-poker' with South Korea backed by the US, and especially without China waiting with a bizillion poker chips worth of military and political support . . .

It just ain't in the cards . . .

North Koreans have been threatening people for years. They're like compulsive liars and I believe on a whole national level, they are born with "inferiority complex" which is clearly seen in S. Koreans i.e. flashing expensive products, claiming to be 'superior', calling other Asians 'dirty' etc.
