Teaching in Korea for nearly four years has taught me that when students go overseas for a year to study English they pick up a lot of the accent but none of the manners.

What prompted this?

It sounds like there is a very good story behind this.

This is me curious.

Hear, hear. My four years confirms that, but I knew it after just 6 months in Korea. And it's much more that westerners hold doors open for the next guy...

This is probably because they have gone to a big city with Koreatowns and hang out with Koreans at Korean restaurants and get groceries at Korean grocery stores. At least I see that a lot here in Toronto.

Can the same be said of Westerners in Korea. Not all of them appreciate the cultural events like you. Or even bother to learn Korean...eh?

Nothing specifically prompted this, just an accumulation of frustration dealing with returnees. Don't tell me I'm the only one who thinks kids who spend 9 months or a couple years overseas come back and become the biggest headaches in your classes? They're by far the rudest students I deal with, they act like their English is perfect because they can pronounce "z," and they don't think they have anything they can learn.
