Choi Hui-seon turns "racist c**t" text message into news story.

Choi Hui-seon is back for more, this time reporting on the response her earlier pieces on native speaker English teachers generated. You can Korea Beat translations of what she wrote earlier:
* from June 30th, 2009.
* from July 1st, 2009.
* from July 2nd, 2009.
* from July 3rd, 2009.

Though I understand the frustration with her hit-pieces, calling her a racist cunt wasn't a very diplomatic move and won't win any sympathy.

In fact, it only adds fuel to her bonfire.

Awesome.

Generate stories by making shit up, then generate another story on reaction to the made up shit.

No, not very diplomatic, but in my book, not inaccurate either.

Course, I took my frustrations out by writing to the KHRC. One would hope that's more productive than screaming profanities at Choi.

Nice and smart move. Thats a very sensible and mature way of addressing an issue. In my book, you are well educated and decent

Oh, I agree that she still needs to account for the garbage she wrote. And as somebody told me on Facebook, if she's going to be in the business of attacking people and spreading hate for a living she needs to develop thicker skin.

But, you're not going to win points by calling her a cunt. I know that people like her won't respond to reasonable, rational arguments, but it doesn't help that she now considers herself a victim.

I'd like to invite her to go fuck herself. I fully expect that quotation attributed to "B씨 in Jeollanam-do" in the next article.

How do we know that she didn't text herself or have someone do it for this exact purpose?

njchiasson said...

I'd like to introduce her to some Russian friends...she might need to use voice-type after the meeting.

Brian said...

Well, that's a good point, John.

Not that it makes a huge difference, but 00700 denotes an international number... correct?

Brian said...

You can use 00700 locally, right? Moreover, you can change your outgoing phone number on text messages, so it'd be easy enough to fake I suppose.

I'm not convinced. That could say anything. Racist Coot? Racist cult? Racist clit? clot? clut(z)? chat? chet (could be someone she knows)? coat? cant? celt(those guys are the worst)? cast (why are they always white?) Cost? CYST? jeez. Seriously, before we all go jumping to conclusions about this bad boy... let's just take a moment and relax. I'm sure miss Choi will one day meet the Canadian of her dreams.

What is all this turn the other cheek nonsense? If someone insults me, why do I have to take the highroad? She got what she deserved, and no apologies are necessary.
Give me her phone number. I'll send the whore a message, and she can call me after to chit chat.

Hey you know what? The door has been opened and it sounds like someone is listening. So this situation has the potential to become an opportunity.

I love the "One Sweet Day" wallpaper behind the "racist cunt" text message, lol.

What is really aggravating about the article, is that is does not address a single point why we think she and the Chosun are attacking "us".

No mention of using rumour as fact, no mention of the absence of hard data to back up claims, no mention of the absence of interviews with the "accused" (or ANY foreigner at all), no mention of using one-sided unverified information from a decidedly anti-foreigner cyber community, etc. etc.

Just, they disagree with us. Boo hoo.

We need to get some people to get ID's and passwords for that site and leave some comments. It's all in Korean so I couldn't do it.

Why get in a pissing contest with Koreans who are going to be pre-disposed to being hostile with you? Serves no purpose to engage such people.

Emailing Ms.Choi (politely) and ask for her sources might be a better option, if she even bothered to reply now. You'd have to be specific about which sources you'd want, to get the answers you're looking for.

eg, Where can we find the quote that was attributed to "H" (the one that sounds like it was not actually uttered by a native speaker)?

Ask her to provide stats to back up this point or that point. Politely.

Any journalist with integrity and professionalism would back up what they write, if approached to do so.

If the Korean press was pulling this 1933 race baiting stuff with their 3D migrant worker population, the international community would come down hard on them. But ESL teachers?

I'm reminded of how Joan Rivers used to make the nastiest jokes about Elizabeth Taylor ("when she pierces her ears, gravy comes out..."). When asked if she thought it was cruel to make fun of the fat actress, Rivers would note Taylor was rich, an Oscar winner, had lived most of her life as one of the most beautiful women in the world... So who cared? She could take it.

Anyway, there are few nations that have perfect "hard targets" like Korea and its Western English teachers. Not only do we educate their children, feed them, console them when they're balling their eyes out because they failed a hagwon test, and tend to the bruises their mothers leave all over their bodies and skulls, but we're fall guys for Korean society at large.

First, the press can attack bad government policy (immigration, education, social morals like drugs/prostitution/child abuse/disease, etc.) without having to implicate Korean society. "Only a horrible government would let these english teachers run wild in the streets raping our children". Face it, we're a tool by which the press can make the government look bad and not cause a lot of blow back.

Second, most of us can largely pick up our bat 'n' ball and go home if we don't like it. It's not like we have to return to Bangladesh. Canada, NZ, Australia await us with clean water, good government, free health care, liberal democracies, top flight universities, professional police forces, no draft, etc.

And yeah they're riding your balls now but seriously, how many of these Korean journalists or Anti English Spectrum guys are ever going to live your post-Korea lives? How many are going to have detached homes, backyards, 4 weeks vacation, live on water, own a boat, have a swimming pool, vacation in Hawaii (vs Jeju-do telling themselves it's Hawaii). Seriously, the most they will be able to hope for is to be able to save enough so they can get an apartment with an extra room for their in-laws so they don't have to sleep in the same room with their in-laws. (This is a long way of saying the best revenge is living well. You will. They won't.)

Third, not many NGOs have the time or budget or motivation to worry about the plight of white university educated healthy youth who are perceived as being rich.

Fourth, try that with the foreign business community. When we leave, we leave with chump change. When the foreign business community leaves, they leave with jobs.

If you are talking to me, then I ask why I should be the one to extend an olive branch. I have no interest in trying to win the approval of a whore like her.

This is definitely one situation in which someone IS being a little cunty and taking herself WAYYYYYY too seriously.

Reminds me of Ann Coulter... we should really convince good ole Ann to teach in Korea and then someone can introduce her to this "reporter" chick. Now THAT would be fun. Racist, devil-God worshiping Ann against her Korean counterpart.

Ann probably has hotter legs, and I bet Ann really is a whore. Sorry Samuel, I just don't see anyone with enough time to cry over a text message getting laid all that often.

I didn't say any thing about extending an olive branch. The article as translated by Korea beat seemingly has quotes from blog comments. While there is a strong possibility that they had been fabricated fit the purpose of the article, I think that the "Racist Cunt" text message actually sends a clear message to the Korean press that people are tired of getting potrayed as criminals, drug users, and rapists.

Sites like this, Korean media watch, Koreabeat, and The Marmot's Hole, also seem to convey that message pretty clear. As long as the message is clear that this type of depiction of English teachers in the Korean media, makes the Korean media seem like amature hour, I think that their can be work done to polish that image.

By no means is this an olive branch, because here is the situation as I see it from the perspective of an EPIK person.

1. There is only EIK, there is no EPIK, becuase there is nothing about that system that would indicate a program. The various Korean school boards still don't know what the hell to do with us, and the buck gets passed to the Korean Co-teachers who also don't know what to do with us.

2. There is no culture of checking CV's or resumes in Korea. The press is making a big stink out of everything, when some of the so called problems could have been resolved if the people doing the hiring of NET's would have called references or past job places. My Korean fiance explained to me that even when Korean people get jobs, no one checks anything, they just get a slip of paper that is proof that they worked at a certain place, there is no back checking of competence.

3. English Curricula in Korea makes absolutly no sense. The stuff that the Korean teachers teach is often laden with Konglish, and often isn't organized in any logical fashion. Blaming the NET's for such stuff is complete rubbish and needs to stop.

That is the type of message that needs to be sent to the Korean media. The first salvo of calling tha lady a cunt, may be distatefull but it sure got her attention.

Right, because everyone else is too busy fucking at work to comment on blogs, or is too busy getting fucked at home, too. In the locker room it is always the guy with the microdick not getting any who brags the loudest.

Once I dated a girl, and then called it off abruptly. She then tried to have me arrested. I also dated another girl who would send me late night text messages "I'll kill you" when I didnt phone her back. There was also another girl who threatened to turn me into immigration if I didnt take her out on a date...she found this hilarious.

Im sure you guys get the picture
