Suncheon school principal stabs himself outside the house of a local newspaper reporter.
Strange story out of Suncheon, as a 59-year-old principal of an elementary school in Suncheon went to Gwangju late Wednesday night and stabbed himself in the stomach outside the house of a local newspaper reporter. The principal was being investigated by the Suncheon Office of Education for having an affair with a teacher, based on some purchases made on the school credit card says CNB News, and went to the reporter's house after the investigation wrapped up at 10:00 PM, under the pretense of setting the record straight. The principal survived and was taken to a St. Carollo Hospital in Suncheon and later moved to Chonnam University Hospital in Gwangju.

So this guy was being called out by the local media for having sex with another teacher. Wow, the lengths that the press will go through to smear foreign teachers... oh, wait, he's Korean. Well, what typical behavior on his part. I'm sure lots of other principals are doing that, right?
Seriously, though, the media over the past decade has been going after teachers and educators both Korean and foreign for perceived bad acts. I'm not saying that makes it right, but it paints a different picture.
I can't read the Korean text on this article (Korean PC versus Mac issue, I think), but this guy is being investigated by the local school board based on a newspaper article and he's not a foreigner.
Well, there were a halfdozen articles on this when I typed this up, and I was under the impression he didn't hurt himself based on a newspaper article but rather on some strange charges to his card. I guess he went to the paper to get his side of the story out.
But since you're taking that tone, let's read through these articles carefully to see what the reporters have had to say about the dangers Korean principals pose to their coworkers and students. Once again, nobody is saying the media ignores the misdeeds of Korean teachers. (Well, certian misdeeds.) This story was on the front page of the Chosun Ilbo site for many hours.
Look, I'm not interested in getting into that discussion, again, so let's just stick to the topic at hand. I think, in spite of the interesting points you've raised on your site, that you can understand the anger many are feeling at these hit pieces in the Chosun Ilbo.
Well, sorry about the tone. I wasn't really addressing it to you or any particular reader but a meme found in the K-blogs lately.
Actually, the Korean media has created a body of work such that people think many teachers and principals are indeed physically dangerous to kids or possibly even sexual predators, who waste government dollars on frivolous things.
I'll start paying more attention to these things. There's a horror movie or two I have to see where evil educators play a significant role.
But I'm going to stop now. If this guy has been persecuted by the press, I feel for the guy very much.
Being stabbed in the stomach - regardless of who's doing it - can't be pleasant. My first thought after reading this was to wonder what he'll do/how he'll feel after he's released from the hospital ...
