There's a Lighting Festival on from now through February 28th that looks really awesome. It's held in Gyeonggi-do's Gapyeong county, at the
Garden of Morning Calm, which judging by the website looks worth a visit during warmer weather, too. There's a profile from
Korea.net here, and below are a few pictures I stole off the garden's website.

Buses run regularly from the
Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to the terminal in Cheongpyeong, from whence you take a taxi or local bus to the garden. The garden opens at 9 am, and the lights are on from 5 to 8:30 pm.

Wow, that looks gorgeous.
I lived there not all that long ago, but it was a cultureless boring-as-shit wasteland.
Figures, that AFTER I leave the area they would spruce it up with something this beautiful.
The valley the garden sits in is actually quite scenic but it is a nightmare trying to get there because of the traffic that gets backed up on the winding road into the valley. Then once there the place is overfilled with people and really not enjoyable.
I have only been there a couple of times on the weekend. I am willing to bet if you go on a weekday it will probably be more enjoyable due to smaller crowds.
I asked my coworkers about this and they told me that it was hell trying to get there on a weekend or national holiday. (Say, Christmas) What should have been a one hour drive from Uijeongbu to Gapyeong-gun turned into a three-hour trip for our academy director's wife a couple years ago. I bet that was fun.
The bus terminal in Uijeongbu also offers direct buses to Gapyeong, which may be useful for anyone who lives in northern Gyeonggi-do and doesn't want to head south into Seoul only to take a bus that's heading back north.
I joke with my coworkers that I've seen more in Jeollanam-do than I have in northern Gyeonggi-do and it's thanks to all the info you post on your blog. Guess I should start researching stuff to do here so I can share it with other K-bloggers!
Damn, sucks about the traffic. I'd like to check it out. Easy to forget how country parts of Gyeonggi-do are. I'll have to look into it and see if I can't sneak away during a weekday in February. Thanks for the information, ROK Drop and samedi.
I concur, Samedi. Get on it!
