As per request, I've added information about Gwangju's new IMAX theater, which opened on the 29th at the new section of the Gwangju Bus Terminal, to my post on movie theaters in Gwangju. If you click through this link and scroll down a little, you can find information on what's playing.
On the topic of movie theaters, I recently got an email about "Korea Movie Times," which has, in English, listings and showtimes for Korean movie theaters, including those in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do. Add it to your "favorites" folder.
The new IMAX theater doesn't simply mean more movies; it means Gwangju's second Burger King and its first Cold Stone Creamery!!! If you've never had Cold Stone, it's excellent: it's ice cream mixed with candy and other toppings in front of you, then set in a cone or a waffle dish. Very very rich, very very good. I first had it in Taipei, and was suprised to learn they're all over Seoul and Pittsburgh, among other places. Droll at the menu here; take a look at some guys in action in California:
With this news it's official: the most happenin' place in Gwangju is the bus terminal.

Coldstone's great. I've never been to one in Seoul, as far as I remember, but I often go to one near Safeway here in Honolulu.
It's a great place to bring a date. As long as she doesn't have hepatitis or TB.
We just got one in Ulsan too, and another just opened in Busan's Seomyeon area.
I'm curious if it'll hurt Baskin Robbins, which has a real lock on the competition in Korea.
If only someone would put Dunkin out of business here. Then we wouldn't have to hear those "1,2,3 and 4,5,6...loasting!" commercials anymore.
I guess its worth to check that out. Haven't tried it, i hope i wont get addicted...plus the IMAX theater. nice combo
Aaron, I don't think it will hurt Baskin-Robbins all that much. The cheaper Baskin-Robbins experience of carrying around a cone is entirely different from the must-sit-down experience of pricier Coldstone.
And aren't most Baskin-Robbins tied up with Dunkin Donuts? Even if every ice cream consumer ends up at Coldstone, the Homeresque Korean consumer will still feel compelled to walk into a Baskin-Robbins on a regular basis.
Not that it matters much, but I think you're wrong Kushibo.
I see this as a upgrade...like Quizno's did with Subway a few years ago. Getting people to pay more for a better product. It won't mean people will just start eating twice as much ice cream. Some will, but for the number of outlets Cold Stone seems to be opening here, I think they've got their target set on 31 flavors. And like you say...it's more of a "date" place, which is what young Koreans and families are looking for.
I say we start seeing baskin robins close within the year.
not as good as amy's ice cream in austin (same concept better product), that blows away coldstone by a mile
but you make due with what you can find
We dont have this in the UK, ill have to drop down and give it a spin
They have an Amy's in Houston too.. First class. Marble Slab was the original concept that ColdStone improved upon.. All of them are infinitely better than BR31..
If ColdStone's the new date place.. then what's going to happen to the Pizza Huts! ;)
Will ColdStone have a "couple set?"
The first I heard of Coldstone was when I was in Taipei this February. My girlfriend said they're really great, and they're all over Japan, so we tried it . . . twice. Not only did it taste great but it was fun watching the people behind the counter mash up the ice cream real fast and do little tricks.
When I came back from Taiwan I checked the internet and learned that not only are they all over Seoul, but all over the US, with a bunch in Pittsburgh that I had never seen.
Anyway, I went to the one in Gwangju today. The ice cream was good, but they're having some growing pains it looks like. Customers aren't really sure how to order. The sizes look smaller than I remember in Taiwan, and ordreing was a lot more tricky here than there. The people behind the counter also took a lot longer, much like they do at "fast" food restaurants. I'll have to give it a lot more time before I pass full judgement on it, but I hope it doesn't get too . . . Korean (high prices, slow and boring service).
And they do have a "couple set" called "Just Duet it" or something.
hahaha a couple's set. I hope they also don't decide to start Koreanizing the actual product. I can see the potential for them to put some kind of red-bean sauce on the sundaes. Pizza Hut's Koreanization is rather pointless because the whole point of Pizza Hut is their type of pizza. If I (or Koreans) want korean-style pizza, then there are plenty of home-grown spots where you can get kimchi corn pizza all day long.
