5 Korea blogs you should be reading but probably aren't.

Everybody reads Korea Beat, The Marmot's Hole, and Roboseyo, but there are a few others that you really should include in your daily routine.

1. Ask the Expat. Done by the guy from The Morning Clam and the administrator of the massive "ESL Teachers in Korea" Facebook group, he answers the questions he gets about living and working in Korea. He's not only thorough but prolific as well, with 25 posts in the 27 days he's been around.

2. Extra! Korea. A new start-up from "Troll_Bait" of Dave's ESL Cafe, it helps fill an important void of news coverage since Robert Koehler has been increasingly absent from The Marmot's Hole.

3. An Acorn in the Dog's Food. The half-assed armchair sociology of the Korean blogosphere is extremely tired, and it's refreshing to read an informative blog with a lot on temples and travel. The key word being informative, Paul also posts on current events and culture from time to time.

4. Monster Island! (Actually a peninsula). "Kushibo"'s blog, and if he comments on your site you've probably seen him link it eleven times a day. A rather, um, controversial member of the blogging community, he is insightful and well-informed, and I think the only one-man blogging show who posts more than I do.

5. Chris in South Korea. Chris travels somewhere new each week and blogs about it. In between he has tons of photos, stories, and commentary on news and culture.

I'm sorry to those listed, I'm not implying that people aren't reading you now. I just mean more people should be. The five here have an average of only 22 subscribers through Google Reader, if that's anything to go on.

Thanks, Brian. I haven't visited any of those blogs, but soon will.

By the way, it took all the restraint I could muster not to write "Brain" above.

@Brian, thanks for the plug :) The other sites you mention are definitely worth reading, especially Ask the Expat (wow, 25 lengthy posts in 27 days is definitely a way to start a blog - he's yet to pick up the commenting traffic from facebook from the looks of things.

"half-assed armchair sociology" describes my blog to a T.

I have Extra! Korea on my short list of updates for blogs I read (along with yours). I like it for bringing the type of general news that the Marmot's Hole lately has been lacking. I visit Chris in South Korea from time to time. I hadn't heard of Ask the Expat or An Acorn in the Dog's Food, but I will try to check them out.

As for your running comment that I stuff every comment with six or eleven links, to be fair, I'm doing so when it's highly relevant or purposeful, like this link that demonstrates I have linked back to your site sixteen times in the past six weeks. (Ha ha! See how I did that?)

My blog has well over 1000 posts going back four years, some of them that took a lot of time to put together, and a lot of the stuff is relevant to new stuff that's happening today. And to be fair, I give back as much as I take in terms of linkage.

Anyway, this is a nice touch, Brian. I started doing something like this, focusing on each one individually, but got sidetracked. When I'm no longer reeling from the end of the semester, maybe I'll get to it.

BTW, how does one get traffic from Facebook?

Hey Brian, would you mind shooting me an email? I have a thought that I would like to discuss with you, but I don't know how I would go about contacting you. Thanks.

I feel slighted and hurt. ㅠㅠ

Thanks for the mention, Brian! I've enjoyed the travelogues from Chris in South Korea and started checking out the other blogs last night.

Kushibo:

I think the reference to Facebook traffic comes from the number of questions that get asked on the ESL Teachers in Korea board, which at some point might be asked on Ask the Expat instead.

For what it's worth, I first heard of Ask the Expat when he linked to it in response to a Facebook thread on whether it was better to live in Seoul or one of the surrounding suburbs in Gyeonggi-do.

Point taken, kushibo, about all your linkage. I wasn't trying to be mean, just pointing out a recent trend. I myself haven't read most of the posts on your site, so could do with a little refresher on those topics, especially since the "news" seems to be recycled every so often anyway. In fact because audiences grow and change so much, I wonder how many readers now even read my site six months ago or a year ago. I wonder how many even know about other, older websites like yours, Marmot's Hole, Metropolitician, and so on.

Thanks for the linkage, man. I've gotten tons of fresh emails that should keep me busy for awhile.

I'm a fan of all the blogs posted here and am trying to find the best way to link each one in the sidebar without overkilling it.

As far as your last statement goes, the K-Blog scene evolves so fast. Right now we're approaching the thrird wave as Kevin mentioned before and I wonder if the second generation will fade like the old classics did. It'll be interesting to see.

Thanks again...
