Kang Shin-who wins another award.

The Korea Times’ Kang Shin-who (강신후) has won another award:
Kang Shin-who, a Korea Times City Desk reporter, has been named "Journalist of the Month" for his scoop on admission irregularities for Korean students heading to U.S. universities.

Kang won another JAK Scoop Award in October
for his scoops on the controversial nontaxable status of U.S.-based TOEFL test provider, ETS.

Those awards aside, he earned quite a reputation among native speaker English teachers here for his history of bias, fabrication, and distortion in articles about English education and foreign teachers in South Korea. After his first win I took to calling him “Korea’s worst journalist,” which encouraged him to threaten me with an immigration investigation in December, an investigation that came a couple weeks later. Based on this clear history, including his favorable coverage of the online cafe slash hate-group "Anti-English Spectrum" of which he is at least a registered member, I notice to the paper's credit he's been off the foreign teacher beat for the past month, and has taken to writing about “unqualified” foreign students instead.

Well, our loss is surely the unqualified foreign students' ummm loss.

I'm still waiting for Kang to hit puberty.

I think if Keystone Kang ever had to write a nice word about foreigners--ANY foreigners--I think he'd implode.

I kind of like how a google search on his name turns up some pretty funny and revealing page titles:

Kang Shin-who, Korea's worst journalist ...
Fuck Kang Shin-who
Worst reporter Kang ...

I went through and fixed all the typos and broken links. I blame the former on being really tired, and I blame the latter on drafting the post in Microsoft Word, which screwed up the HTML when I copied it into blogger. Thankfully nobody called me an "unqualified" foreign blogger.

"Unqualified foreign students banned from scholarship"

Absolutely love that that 700+ foreign students receiving government scholarships are depicted on the chart as having blond hair and blue eyes! Hilarious.

The article says:

"44 students ― 12 undergraduates from six countries and 32 graduates from 20 countries ― failed to meet the program criteria but were offered scholarships after embassies attached 'excuse letters' to their school records."

Yeah, sounds exactly like the work of those 26 blonde-haired, blue-eyed countries. Korea is a paradise for them...

Kang Shin-who is nothing but a racist propagandist.

Indeed. As far as I know, most are Chinese. Maybe put a Chinese person? Oh but that would upset china. We all know Korea whines like a stuck bitch if the USA is perceived to have slighted them but keep your eyes down if China does it in spades.

Sorry, felt I should clarify my comment so I don't look like a complete idiot who can't read.

So, as I was saying, who are "The Journalist Association of Korea (JAK) and the Korea Press Foundation?" Ok, ok, the names sound pretty obvious, but what I mean is, are they the authority on journalism in Korea, or are they small organizations with big names? See what I mean?

Oh... and where did the nickname "Keystone Kang" come from?

@Puffin Watch: Whenever a Chinese group comes to my work we roll out the red carpet (ie, real red carpet) and put a big banner above the entrance to our recption hall saying in Chinese "We welcome ABC Company to our Workplace"

We've had heads of state and ambassadors from other countries visiting almost every month, but only the Chinese get this VIP treatment.

Ha. I might have spoken too soon. SK getting a bit of spine with China finally:

He's a douche.

The irony of you calling him out. He could hardly have spent more time spewing hate than you have.

"Spewing hate" would be me writing something like "1, go fuck yourself you worthless twat," and I haven't spent much time doing that over the years, so you must have the wrong guy.

Chris, I tried to find more information about the awards and the organizations who give them, but couldn't. It's something I'll have to pay attention to in the future.

Regarding Keystone Kang, I'm not sure who first gave him that name. I've never used it. It's in reference to, I'm assuming, Keystone Kops, but I've never found that comparison really proper.

Kang isn't incompetent, and he doesn't make mistakes by accident. He fabricates and distorts---we've shown a clear pattern of that on this site and pretty much everywhere else NSETs gather---with a very clear purpose.

As I said in this post, I'm glad that the Times has taken him off the foreign teacher beat for the time being.

I did a little sleuthing, using text printed on a banner in a picture of Kang taken at the awards ceremony, and one of the organizations is the 한국기자협회. Don't know anything else about them.
