중흥골드스파&리조트 - Naju's Jungheung Gold Spa and Resort.

I've been getting some hits off google searches for "Naju Waterpark" and similar terms, so I wanted to do a little post on the waterpark in Naju. I mentioned it back in November but it's buried at the bottom of a long post that nobody cares about. The park is called Jungheung Gold Spa and Resort and is in Nampyeong-eup, which borders Gwangju to the southwest. The facility has a waterpark, indoor swimming and spa facilities, some condos, a golf course, and apparently a little bungee jumping thing. It looks like it'd be worth a visit if you're in the area, but it looks more geared to kids and families. Good pictures are a little hard to come by, but you can take a look at all the rides by going here and clicking through the menu on your left. Holy shit the Tornado looks awesome, and the "Rocket" is one of eight in the world.

From looking at the site I couldn't figure out how to get there. People on Naver have been asking, too, and it looks like somebody posted a timetable of buses to the resort from various places in Gwangju. No idea where the user got it or how accurate it is, but you could always ask at the tourist information booth inside the Gwangju Bus Terminal.

Also in Jeollanam-do, in Jangheung county, is Oksum Waterpark. It's small, kind of a family destination I guess, but it's there. It's on Sumun Beach (수문해수욕장) and is on the border of Boseong county, home of the well-known tea fields. I haven't the faintest idea how to get there by bus.

There's also a little theme park in Gwangju called Kumho Family Land, which I talked about before, and which apparently has some kind of tube ride this summer.

Here's an update (July 7): A new water park in Yeosu just opened up.

I really love waterparks and I've always wanted to go to the Lotte one in Seoul, but being the one foreigner -- standing in line for an hour wearing nothing but swimtrunks -- sounds like my personal vision of hell.

Yeah, I'm self-conscious enough going to a swimming pool back home . . . I think it'd be tough to do a waterpark here. Plus, the ones in Naju and Jangheung look set up for kids and families, so I'd feel really out of place if I went alone. But, I'd love to try that Tornado, and all in all it looks like it'd be a neat trip. Neat, but crowded I'll bet.

The one in Jangheung is kind of weird because it's absolutely in the middle of nowhere. You're driving along the coast and then you see a big 14-story building right in front of you. It has the elevator sticking out and it meets the building at a skybridge on the top floor. Just weird that it's so remote, and also right next to a beach. Anyway, looks like those are the only two in Jeollanam-do, but I'll bet if you put them in other counties and cities here---especially if you had plenty of indoor stuff for quote-unquote off-season---you'd make a killing.

So I went to the waterpark in Naju last weekend, and it was a ton of fun!! Some points I think are worth mentioning: It's 46,000 to enter (32,000 if you have one of the 15 or so listed credit cards, which get you a discount) but you also have to pay 1,000 each time you ride a couple of the rides (the tornado and the rocket). Also, to go in the Amazon River (lazy river) you have to rent a life vest (4,000). You also have to have either a swimcap or a baseball cap in order to go in any of the indoor pools. Also, there's a pool that is labeled as being Doctor Fish, but there's no fish. If you know that going in, though, it's a good, full day!
