2nd annual "King of the Mountain" race on Wolchulsan.

Saturday, June 26th will be the 2nd annual "King of the Mountain" race up and down Yeongam county's Wolchulsan, an event started last year by an Australian teaching English in Jeollanam-do. There is a 5,000 won entry fee, with proceeds going to the non-profit group Environmental Awareness Education Program recently founded by a Canadian in Gwangju. From the official site:
The race will take you from near sea level, almost vertically up to 809 meters above sea level, then across a ridge to the second peak of 743m and down the other side, finishing about 8.6 kilometers later, in the beautiful temple surroundings of Dogapsa.

. . .
Even if you don't think you're up for the challenge of racing over a mountain, please join in and do a "fun run / walk" with your friends. Perhaps you'd like to join in the theme of caring for the environment and bring along a trash bag to collect some garbage in the park and make it a little more clean & "green".

There is more information on the official site, and those interested are asked to register there as well. There is also a Facebook group for the race.

Wolchulsan is one of the few places in Korea I regret never having the chance to visit. Google will be your friend for more information about it and the eponymous national park, and a blog search turns up loads of good write-ups, too.

That pic is beautiful, especially with all the trees lined up.

Thank you, cshin9.

I remember that day well, a school trip, and this is one of those pictures that looks better to me the older it gets.
