Local investigators said that the male Korean student, identified by his surname Kang, was walking down the street in the Siberian city of Barnaul on Monday with a female friend when the attack ensued.A knife was used in the attack, Russian sources report, via KBS. Yonhap says he was a student at Gwangju National University of Education (광주교육대학교), and that the school president accompanied the student's parents to Russia on the 18th. Arirang says Korean students were killed in Russia in 2005 and 2007.
Doctors at the hospital where Kang was transported to said Kang was placed in intensive care, where he died on Thursday from his injuries.
Kang, a sophomore at a university in Gwangju, had been taking part in an exchange program at a university in Barnaul near Russia’s border with Kazakhstan.
Local police said three suspects, aged between ten and 20, have been arrested and are being investigated for aggravated assault.

Gwangju student murdered in Russia by group of young thugs.
Very sad news as a university student from Gwangju died in Russia on Thursday as a result of injuries sustained in an assault three days earlier. KBS has the story; an excerpt:

Poor guy. There are few things more disgusting than senseless violence.
I wonder if it was racially motivated. I've heard stories about gangs of racist thugs randomly attacking people in Russia.
Between TEN and 20? Fuck.
My condolences to the family.
Russia is pretty crazy these days. Not good to be non-"russian" in more than a few places.
In Russia have people...no, animals, what are called Skinheads. They kill anyone who looks not slavenian type. some students are lucky, who havent died after meeting of those @%#$#%$.
I'm sorry I have many emotions about this, because I live in Ukraine and in here have the same shit. In evening can't go out nowhere even near home to buy milk. In daytime all time worryed and in metro always have big stress. When finished this study year we will move out of this country. If someday you decide travel to Russia or Ukraine, please becareful.
I have an ex-flatmate ('roommate') from here in New Zealand who was studying at a university in Russia fairly recently, so I know it is, in fact, a lot more dangerous there.
Shocking evidence is, however, available to add an emotional edge in the lack of available statistics one way or the other:

Oh and as to the issue of the age of the attackers:

So terrible for the family...
Man, that is sad. Hope the dude's family is doing alright. I hope there is some justice too.
From what I've been told, it's even dangerous there for Russians.
That's sad.
Ive read that crime rate especially homicide is fairly higher in the Siberian area and Russian Far East as compared to the European Russia. Ive long been planning a trip to Russia via the Trans-Siberian route. I hope its ok.
And for some statistics

I was thinking along the same lines.
It’s a murder, and that is a tragedy in and of itself, but what is the evidence that it was a race-motivated hate crime (in the legalistic sense)? In many places, Asian tourists — originally just Japanese, but increasingly affluent South Koreans and others — are targets of thuggish thieves looking for a quick score.
I’m just asking. It doesn’t mean that the poor guy (and his loved ones) suffer/ed any less.
GNUoE has suspended that exchange program, and is contemplating halting others:

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that non-whites are targets in Russia. If they had bothered to do any kind of research whatsoever (oh, say, talk to Central Asian immigrants who live in Russia's larger cities), they would have realized that it's a no-go zone for non-whites due to skinhead proliferation.
Best to send students to other countries in Eastern Europe. There are many places with a vast appreciation for East Asian culture, language, and philosophy.
I'm super sad. The kid that was killed was a very nice guy. We taught English together this summer in Gokseong. My prayers to his family.
Thanks for adding your comment, Pakou. And everyone else as well.
I'll just put this link up to my follow-up for the sake of completion, since this older post is turning up higher in the Google results:

Hate groups seem to be on the rise in Russia more now than ever. Hopefully the country will realize that scaring away all the foreigners will actually hurt the country. Hopefully the government will be quick to act on extinguishing these groups. In the meantime, I'd stay away because you're nothing more than cattle waiting to be slaughtered to these hate groups.
I have read all the comments, and the one thing I noticed was that there were no derogatory comments made towards the Russian people.
What if a Russian or other persons of European descent had been beaten to death in Korea? All Koreans would have been to blame.
The Korean race would have been called every racist name in the English dictionary. And it would have made international headline news.
Why aren't people more upset? This is much worse then some skating event, WTF is wrong with you people.
Korean civility sometimes pisses me off.
Sorry, david, next time we'll try to be more irrational and hateful in order to make you happy.
Eat some kimchi and relax.
guys, im from barnaul...i study in those university where Korean students participated in exchange program..this was and is a real tragedy...i think every student of our institute and lots of people felt this tragedy...please accept our condolonces...we hope murderers will be sternly punished...
It's been 3.5 years since the murder. The guys were caught but I don't think their sentences were that severe. The mother of one of those responsible had her day in court and got to put down the Asian filth, as though it was the poor guy's fault he was brutally murdered. I'd like to know more about the outcome but can't find anything. Within a couple of months, the whole story went quiet - as is typical in Russia.
