"Foreign Men Taking Advantage of Mentally Disabled Women"?

Korea Beat translated this article yesterday. A couple of excerpts:
To acquire citizenship foreign men have begun luring in physically or mentally disabled women. It is especially shocking that they do so in order to take advantage of the kindnesses offered to the disabled to obtain money in addition to citizenship.

The Research Insititute for the Differently Abled Person’s Right in Korea (장애우권익문제연구소) announced recently that it has learned of similar cases. “Foreign men maliciously incite passions in the women or make physical threats to or even sexually assault them, until they succeed in marrying them. By employing these acts of violence for two years they can obtain citizenship.”

Followed by:
According to the Institute, there have so far been two cases. But with an increasing number of foreign laborers and illegal immigrants, there are likely to be more.

Some solid journalism right there. I'm bold enough to go on record as saying it's wrong to take advantage of mentally disabled women. But is it necessary to make nasty generalizations about foreign men based on all of two cases?

Yeah, I love the last bit: "there are likely to be more".

Right. Riiighhhht. It's likely to rain tomorrow because it's rainy season. It's likely that this week some Korean man will ask me to drink soju with him because it's happened 200 times before. It's likely that my daughter will wet her diaper before bedtime because she isn't quite potty trained.

I don't know how it is that the actions of 2 pathetic non-Koreans can predict the behaviours and actions of thousands of others.

Crap. It's a wretched combination of xenophobia and sloppy English. Grrrrr.

Ya cause Korea's never do anything similar ie. buy brides from other Asian countries for their "differently abled son's" who cant get Korean wives without informing the wives of the men's conditions. And those husbands and the families of those husbands treat the wives REAL good :P

Yes, and Korean men in America are likely to burst onto university campuses and murder upwards of 30 people. This has only happened once, but "there are likely to be more."

Generalizing from a few examples is a classic formula for Korean journalism. I recall one story from years past with headlines shouting that false sexual harassment charges were greatly increasing. The article detailed three specific cases. That's it. Not a single statistic to support the use of the word "increase." If three cases is an increase, then there must have been zero to two in previous years.

The corrollary to "a few isolated examples = big problem" is the distortion of statistics. How often have we seen headlines screaming "Imports of Foreign XYZ Up 200%" and then read the story to find out that the increase was from 200 XYZs to 600.
