New Zealand teacher dies of pneumonia in hospital after bus crash on way to Incheon Airport.

An excerpt from The Gisbourne Herald on May 7th:
Long-time Gisborne Boys’ High School teacher and local identity John McFarlane died unexpectedly in Korea yesterday.

Mr McFarlane was on his way to France, where he was to do another tour in his canal boat.

During a stopover in Korea nearly two weeks ago he was in a minibus which crashed on its way from the airport in Seoul to his hotel, said friend and colleague Gillian Armstrong.

Mr McFarlane suffered six broken ribs in the accident and was kept in hospital when he developed pneumonia, said Mrs Armstrong.

He had been making great progress and was up and about on Wednesday when a local friend arrived to join him. But yesterday Mrs Armstrong was contacted by the hospital after Mr McFarlane’s condition deteriorated dramatically.

The article continues by talking about his work for the community and for his students. The news comes via an ExpatKorea thread, and was mentioned vaguely in a Dave's ESL Cafe post on the 9th.

So I am confused. Was he a teacher in Korea or just visiting here?

He wasn't teaching here, just passing through.

Any reason he was here? School related event?
