Documentary on people and cats in Korea, Wednesday night on EBS.

The second half of a two-part documentary on cats in Korea called 인간과 고양이 will be on EBS tonight from 9:50 to 10:40. This half is titled "고양이 전쟁," and yesterday's was "고양이별." Watch trailers to both by clicking on episode number 78 here; tonight's looks like the more painful of the two.

This information comes from the prolific author of the blog F-30, who writes on Dave's ESL Cafe:
This documentary has taken quite a while to film - I was interviewed for it in July and they've been working on it ever since (edit: just found out that it took eight months to film). It's about cats in Korea, and especially about their relationship with humans here, both people that like and hate them. I've noticed a large improvement over the past few years, though there's still a long way to go.

Thanks for posting... My girlfriend and I are very interested in the subject of cats in Korea. We have two rescued cats and if we had space we'd probably have more. She spends a lot of time volunteering for KAPS, too.

I posted a number of interesting links for people wishing to help the situation (ie volunteer or donate) on an old blog post - http://koreanrumdiary.blogspot.com/2009/09/saving-cats-dogs.html

I look forward to watching the show and waiting for Dave's ESL regulars to talk about how Koreans have the right to burn cats alive or boil them to ward off swine flu...

That documentary turned out to be much more depressing than I thought. Depressing for cat lovers, but perhaps more effective for those that have never given much thought to them since it shows their lives on the street as being pretty harsh and humans come across as being cold, cruel and insensitive. If it ends up having a stronger effect in the end as a result then I suppose a depressing documentary isn't such a bad thing.

Hopefully today's part will end on a more positive note though.

It just ended and part 2 was much better than the first. This one focused on 1) how Korea doesn't do a good job of taking care of its street cats; 2) how Japan does; 3) people in Korea that are working to make a difference, especially in introducing TNR (trap-neuter-return) to local people as a way to remove the problem of overpopulation, fighting etc.

Just saw it. It was an enjoyable watch but I didn't think it was a well made documentary. It was still nice seeing people from both Japan and Korea (and for once Koreans admiring the Japanese) showing love to animals.

I saw most of part two as well. (David, did you appear on part one?) I do wish it would have focused a bit more on Korea, though, rather than spending all that time in Japan. But I agree it was nice to see people in Korea caring for cats.

Missed the documentary, but I can say that one of my co-workers is definitely cat crazy, and has two kitties.

When my girlfriend and I go on a weekend outings sometimes a Korean friend takes care of them, and loves hanging out with the cats.

When I show pictures of my cats to my students most of them think the cats are cute as well. Only a few of my co-workers are afraid of cats. My co-teacher says she would be afraid of going to her car if a cat was standing next to it, haha.

The street cats here definitely aren't treated as well in Japan. I recall in Osaka I saw volunteers come out and feed the cats near the big castle.

Interesting points. I see some people who are nice to cats (One chickenshop owner was cutting up some chickens and giving the scraps to cats.) And I have also been to a seriously frightnening market where my wife and I saw a boiled dog's head, and a bunch of health broth places 건강원 that had 고양이 (cat) or 개소주 (dog soju) written in the windows. It was a narrow market street that absolutely made my skin crawl.
