Bianca Mobley named goodwill ambassador for the Korean Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Korean-American Bianca Mobley, who appears on the show "Chat with the Beauties"---rendered a bunch of different ways, including "Global Talk Show: Talk with Beauties"---has taken on a new role. From the Chosun Ilbo:
The 20-year old from New York, a popular figure on the panel with her Gyeongsang Province accent and frankness, has been named goodwill ambassador for the Korean Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to promote a campaign teaching young Korean women about sex and reduce abortions.

"In the States, we talk freely about contraception with friends or consult a gynecologist to seek expert advice," Mobley says. "But I see some people here resorting to abortion because of their lack of sexual knowledge. I thought this was a serious problem so I decided to be a goodwill ambassador for the campaign."

I'm curious if there are any actual Koreans in similar roles, or if this is a product of, and will contribute to the perpetuation of, the belief that Americans and Westerners alone can be open about sex. The Chosun Ilbo headline is "American to Promote Franker Talk About Sex in Korea."

In any event the blog The Grand Narrative has written on the topic of contraception before, for example in posts like this and this, so give them a read for some background.

That particular show gets a lot of attention among Korea-based bloggers, both good and bad. Bianca was last mentioned on this site in December when she went after netizens who spread around pictures of her hugging a guy and posing as if touching another woman's breasts. From the Korea Times:
An Internet user who was questioned by the police told local media, ``I sincerely apologize to her. The distribution was not meant to insult her. I have seen many funny photos of the show's panels online so I thought posting the pictures would not cause any trouble.''

I don't know if they are in similar roles, but there is (was) a Korean woman who was (and I loathe to say it) "Korea's Dr. Ruth Westheimer" right down to the call-in radio and TV show. I used to watch it several years back (2002ish?) but haven't seen it since.

I wish I remembered her name; I'd recognize it if someone said it to me. She was popular at the time because of her openness and frankness and no nonsense attitudes toward sex, contraception, disease, and the like.

Of course, the older generation felt scandalized by such talk, but the younger audiences, according to my students, thought she was great.

Maybe she can teach Korean women that they need to see an OB GYN occationally. Ask a Korean woman and chances are she has never been to see one.

Can you imagine an ajosshi OB GYN? Horrible.

1994 - that is a horrifying thought! I think Korean women agree - at the Korean clinic I've been to all of the OB-GYNs were women.
